Women's Empowerment Initiative holds several events throughout the year. Our programs are focused around helping women to champion their own visions for success - by presenting opportunities for spiritual education, vocation advancement, fiscal literacy, market rate home ownership and economic transformation.

Workshops

 

GED Program

The GED Program hold classes in the evening during the Week and on Saturdays.  The Class schedule is set up to the student's schedule.  Classes are currently underway and new classes are being form.  If you are itereste4d or know someone, feel free to contact the WEI Center.  The program is free to all participants.  See GED Flyer

Fundamentals of Estate Planning: Understanding Wills, Trusts and Estates &Finding and Keeping Affordable Insurance

WEI GED Graduation Ceremony
June 25, 2009

11 of our 24 graduates proudly marched down the aisles to receive their GED diplomas.  Over 150 family and friends attended the ceremony to celebrate they achievement.  Each graduate proudly accepted their diploma and spoke to the onlookers telling them the importance of achieving this milestone in their life. Rev Valaria Harvel, minister and professor at Penn State, was the keynote speaker.  Many of the indivduals (women and men) are enrolling in the Community College to continue their education while others are looking to gain better positions or obain a job. 

Financial Peace University 13 week course
March thru June 2009

Several women and families completed the Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University 13 week course. The group met for 13 weeks and worked on eliminating debt, learning how to budget. During the 13 weeks, individually we worked on decreasing our credit card debts and building an emergency fund. At the end of the 13 week course, 5 individuals received certificates for completing the course and attending more than 80% of the classes. Plans for another FPU course is planned for the fall.

Managing Your Money Workshop

Several women attended a workshop lead by Shawn McGeth, Manager of Housing Counseling and Education at The Partnership CDC, a non-profit organization in West Philadelphia. She talked to the group offering insights how to save, spend and manage your money.

Managing Your Money Workshop

Everyone left with some tips on how to identify where their money is going and how to begin to manage the money we have. The first step is to keep a daily spending journal and make a simple budget.

Alfonzo, also from the Partnership CDC, talked to the group about how to save by using coupons and tips on shopping and saving in the Supermarkets using the store's customer shopper card.

GED Graduation Ceremony
November 20, 2008

The rain and cold weather did not stop three of the eight individuals and their family and friends from attending a graduation ceremony honoring them for obtaining their GED Diploma. The three graduated marched into the room dressed in their gold cap and gown as the Rev E. Taylor played the Pomp and Circumstance.

Board member Lynette Brown-Sow, VP Marketing and Government Relations for the Community College of Philadelphia, was the keynote speaker. Each graduated was provided with a journal and application for CCP.

WEI began the GED preparation program in November 2007. There has been as many as 20 individuals that have come thru the program in the past year and are working toward their diploma. Each student starts with an assessment is works on their individual needs.

Classes are continuing in 2009 and are offered on Saturday mornings at the Center. The next graduation ceremony will be in June 2009.
